A head cold is essentially what is commonly known as the common cold. Because its symptoms are frequently felt more strongly in the facial and head region in comparison to a common cold, it is known as a head cold. A head cold lasts generally from 7 to 10 days and can be managed without a visit to the doctor.

Drink more fluids

Increasing your intake of fluids will help in breaking up the congestion. Juice or water will help you to avoid dehydration and your throat will remain moist. A minimum of 8 to 10 glasses of water every day is the recommended amount of fluids that you should take. This may include herbal teas, water, sports drinks, ginger ale, chicken soup or fruit drinks. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and cola because the caffeine in these may cause dehydration.

Inhale steam

This will provide relief from a drippy nose and congestion. To inhale steam, hold your head above a bowl of hot water and breathe in very slowly. The temperature should be comfortable so that the steam does not burn your nose. An alternative could be a humidifier which will provide steam in a similar manner to the hot water. You can also get steam from a hot shower with a closed door or a room humidifier.

You can add 4-5 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil in the hot water. Breathe the vapors in. Eucalyptus essential oil acts great as a decongestant.

Use nasal sprays

Using a saline nasal spray will moisten your nose. You may also make a salt water rinse, which will work as effectively. This helps in removing bacteria and virus particles from the nose. To make your rinse, mix a quarter teaspoon each of baking soda and salt in a glass of warm water. Use a Neti pot of bulb syringe to squirt the rinse into your nose, while holding your head over a basin. Press one nostril with a finger while squirting water into the other one. Allow the water to drain and then repeat the process two to three times. Repeat the same process with the other nostril.

Get sufficient rest

It is extremely important to remain warm and rest so that your body can direct its energy towards improving your immunity and fighting the illness. This process is taxing for the body and it may help to lay down with a blanket.

Drink Ginger Tea

Ginger is a great antiviral herb. Ginger reduces pain and fever. Ginger has also antiseptic and antioxidant properties which is valuable for treating colds, sore throats, and inflammation. Drink ginger tea couple times a day when you are sick.

Eat Echinacea


This herb enhances your over-all immunity. It stimulates white blood cells to defend against illnesses. It also increases other virus fighting substances which reduces the risk of viral respiratory infections. 

Echinacea loses its effectiveness pretty quickly when old or dried. It is best to eat it fresh.  When you feel the cold coming on, eat some leaves and petals. You can also take the newly opening flowers and tincture them fresh. After you have taken the tincture, your tongue may feel numb and tingly.
