Bacterial Vaginosis Home Remedy- 3 Easy Tips

Bacterial vaginosis is a short-term mild infection of the vagina that’s caused by the overgrowth of bad bacteria. Aside from its characteristic fish-smelling yellow or grayish white discharge, this condition is not usually life-threatening and clears up in 3 days with antibiotics. If you’re looking for a natural approach instead then learn how to make a bacterial vaginosis home remedy with these 3 easy tips.

As I’ve said, there are lots of microorganisms, good and bad, found in the vagina. This includes lactic acid bacteria, which forms an acidic environment to protect the vagina from possible infection. In the case of bacterial vaginosis, the bad bacteria, specifically the Gardnerella, Candida, and/or Trichomonas species increase in number while the lactobacilli bacteria decrease.

The problem with taking antibiotics is that they don’t stop this condition from recurring. In fact, it could lead to more problems. Many studies show, however, that topical application of yogurt with Lactobacillus acidophilus, the “good” bacteria, is helpful.

For this purpose, immerse a tampon in live plain yogurt. Leave it inside your vagina for at least 30 minutes. Rinse your vagina with warm water after. Do this every morning for about a week.

But here’s more good news: Eating 150 mL of yogurt enriched with Lactobacillus acidophilus doesn’t only increases the number of these good bacteria, but it also decreases the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut, dubbed as the “Tree of Life,” will not be left behind when it comes to curing bacterial vaginosis. Its oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, specifically capric acid, caprylic acid, and lauric acid, which enable it to fight off serious infections caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

In one study that was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, results showed that virgin coconut oil was highly effective against Candida species, like Candida albicans. And get this: It’s more effective than the anti-fungal drug fluconazole.

To use virgin coconut oil (VCO) for bacterial vaginosis, ingest at least two tablespoons of VCO twice daily. Like with yogurt, you could also dip a tampon in VCO and leave it inside your vagina for half an hour. Wash the area with warm water after tampon removal. Do this for at least a week, or until improvements are seen.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is also called as melaleuca oil, is known to be anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It works great as a bacterial vaginosis treatment. Results of a study showed that tea tree oil is highly effective against opportunistic bacterial-vaginosis-associated bacteria, like Staphylococcus aureus, without affecting so much commensal “good” bacteria.

  •  You can treat bacterial vaginosis by using creams with 10% tea tree or body washes with 5% tea tree for at least 5 days to kill opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms, like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
  • You could also mix 30 mL, which is around 2 tablespoons, of tea tree oil with warm water. Use this mixture to wash your vagina once per day for a month.

Be sure to get a clear diagnosis from your doctor first before using these home remedies.
