This double-blind, randomized study involved 10 patients taking antidepressants, which caused their dry mouth. For 5 days, they were given anetholtrithione (3 x 25 mg daily) and yohimbine (3 x 6 mg daily).

Interestingly, the result showed that yohimbine was a more potent solution to dry mouth than anetholtrithione, which is a drug used for dry mouth.

Mucilages

Simply put, mucilages are plant-based substances that turn gelatinous once mixed with water. They’ve been widely used as a traditional herbal remedy for ulcers, wounds, inflammation, sore throat, and cough.

The bark of the slippery elm (Ulsmus fulva) contains the highest amount of mucilage. In one analysis study, researchers found out that its inner bark contains 7.63% moisture and 5.9% pentosan, which usually forms a protective lining on the bladder wall.

Slippery elm is available in different forms: lozenges, coarse powder (for poultices), and fine powder (for teas). According to the University of Maryland, slippery elm should be taken two hours after or before taking other herbs and drugs.

Contraindications: Breastfeeding and pregnant women should refrain from taking slippery elm.

Saliva Substitutes

As the name suggests, saliva substitutes are used to imitate real human saliva. But it can’t trigger saliva production. You can buy these as sprays, lozenges, and gels. These products usually contain phosphate ions, calcium carboxymethylcellulose, and many more.

Lifestyle Changes

Granting you’re not suffering from any health condition, dry mouth is usually alleviated by a simple modification of your diet and lifestyle. Cigarette smoking, tobacco chewing, drinking of caffeinated beverages—which cause diuresis, thus lead to dehydration—can increase your risk to developing dry mouth.
